Idiopathic scoliosis - Structural spinal curvature for which no cause
has been established.
Iliac apophysis - The
apophysis along the crest of the ilium.
Iliac bone - Part
of the pelvic bone that lies above the hip joint ; autogenous
bone grafts are frequently taken from this area.
Iliac crest - The
large, prominent portion of the pelvic bone at the belt line
of the body.
Ilium - The
dorsal upper and largest one of three bones composing either
lateral half of the pelvis.
Inclinometer - An
instrument used to measure the angle of trunk cage asymmetry
in the forward bend position.
Inflection vertebra - Vertebra situated at the level at which curves
change direction from convex to concave and vice versa.
Internal fixation - Repairing a fracture or deformity by means of open
reduction utilizing pins, screws, plates, rods, ...
Interspinous ligament - Any of the thin membranous ligaments that connect
the spinous processes of contiguous vertebrae.
Intervertebral disc - Tough, elastic discs that are interposed between
the centrum of adjoining vertebrae. It consists of an outer annulus
fibrosis enclosing an inner nucleus pulposus.
